Pakistan left-arm seamer Mohammad Amir believes Shadab Khan and Usama Mir would have been better options than Khushdil Shah for the 2025 Champions Trophy.
He noted that if Pakistan wanted additional spinners to back up Abrar Ahmed, the duo should have been considered for selection as they are both well-versed in the art of spin bowling.
Amir added that someone like Shadab would have given the men in green batting depth and an outstanding fielder.
It should be noted that Khushdil batted well in the Champions Trophy as he was Pakistan’s highest run-scorer with 107 runs in two matches, which included a career-best 69, at an average of 53.50.
He also took one wicket at an average of 83.
“Considering the dry conditions there, spinners might be needed. I feel Usama Mir could have been an option. And if you were bringing in Khushdil Shah, then I think if Usama wasn’t in your plan, you could have kept Shadab Khan instead. He could have provided batting depth as well. When the ball is turning, and you have a full-fledged fielder, then if this was the plan, you could have gone with Shadab. Otherwise, a genuine spinner like Usama could have been a better choice,” Amir said on Geo News’ show Haarna Mana Hai as quoted by Geo Super.
Pakistan lost to New Zealand and India in the Champions Trophy, which led to them crashing out in the group stage.
Their final match against Bangladesh was washed out, meaning they failed to win a single game throughout the tournament.
Pakistan will now embark on a tour of New Zealand, where they will play five T20Is and three ODIs from March 16 to April 5.
