New Zealand have called up spinner Ish Sodhi for the third ODI against Australia in Hamilton on Sunday.
Sodhi is coming off a brilliant stint with the Adelaide Strikers in the Big Bash League, where he took nine wickets in three matches, six of which came in one game against the Sydney Thunder on January 18.
Furthermore, Sodhi enjoyed a lot of success against Australia in Hamilton last year as he dismissed captain Steve Smith and all-rounder Glenn Maxwell in the space of three balls to finish with figures of 2-31, which earned him the Man of the Match award as New Zealand triumphed by 55 runs and won the series 2-1.
“History shows that the Seddon Park pitch can be spin friendly and for that reason Ish has been brought into the squad,” national selector Gavin Larsen said. “We wanted the option of two specialist spinners for this match and it’s a venue that Ish has had some success in at in the past. Mike [Hesson] and Kane [Williamson] will now get the opportunity to assess the pitch over the next couple of days and make a decision from there as to who will be in the playing eleven.”
Meanwhile, batsman Dean Brownlie has retained his place in the side as opener Martin Guptill remains doubtful for the third ODI due to a hamstring strain.
“Martin has made progress in the last couple of days, but it’s not yet clear whether he’ll be available for selection,” Larsen said. “At this stage it’s probably 50-50.”
