Former England batsman Kevin Pietersen will play no part in this year’s Indian Premier League (IPL) after confirming that he won’t be entering his name in the player auction.

Pietersen attributed his decision to a busy winter schedule, during which he played for the Dolphins, a South African domestic side, in the CSA T20 Challenge and for the Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League (BBL).

“I won’t be going into the IPL auction,” Pietersen said via Twitter. “My winter has been too busy with all my travel & I don’t want to spend April/May away too!”

Pietersen represented the Rising Pune Supergiants in last year’s IPL, but only played four games before he was ruled out for the remainder of the tournament with a calf injury.

The 36-year-old was released by the franchise in December and would have had to be bought by a team at the auction in order to participate in the star-studded event.
