New Zealand left-arm seamer Neil Wagner is likely to miss the upcoming Test series against South Africa after fracturing his left ring finger.

Wagner sustained the injury while representing Otago in their Ford Trophy match against Auckland on Wednesday.

New Zealand head coach Mike Hesson revealed that the 30-year-old will be out of action for four to six weeks following an “initial assessment”.

Despite this, Hesson made it clear that the medical staff will do everything in their power to try and get Wagner fit enough for the three-Test series.

“The initial assessment is that Neil will require four to six weeks for recovery, but we’ll be in a position to make a better judgement on that in the next couple of weeks,” he said. “Neil’s an important member of our Test side and he is obviously desperate to play in such a big series, so we’ll do everything we can to get him back on the park as soon as possible.”

The Test series between New Zealand and South Africa begins on March 8 in Dunedin, while the other two Tests will get underway on March 16 and March 25 in Wellington and Hamilton respectively.
