Pakistan all-rounder Shoaib Malik has revealed that he turned down an offer from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to become a selector before the 2024 T20 World Cup.
Malik pointed out that he is still actively playing cricket, which would make it difficult for him to make selection-related decisions as he plays alongside many of the cricketers currently in the national team.
The 42-year-old from Sialkot last represented his country in November 2021, but has been featuring in domestic competitions.
“Look, I only received an offer once before the [T20 World Cup] to become the selector. At that time, the entire selection committee had equal powers as there was no chief selector,” he was quoted as saying by A Sports.
“But my reason [behind declining] was that I am still playing cricket and how can I select those cricketers with whom I play so it did not make sense that you play cricket and become a part of the selection committee simultaneously.”
The Pakistan team recently faced Bangladesh in a two-Test series, which they lost 2-0.
Next up for the men in green will be a three-match Test series against England, which will be held from October 7 to 28.
