Legendary Pakistan spinner Mushtaq Ahmed joked that he and wicketkeeper-batsman Moin Khan “would have been in jail” if the Decision Review System (DRS) existed during his playing days.
Explaining why, he noted that he and Moin would put pressure on umpires to give batsmen out through excessive appealing.
The 54-year-old took 346 international wickets, with 185 coming in 52 Tests at an average of 32.97. As for his ODI career, the Sahiwal native, picked up 161 wickets in 144 matches at an average of 33.29.
“Moin Khan played a big role in my wickets. He would tell me that this umpire is a bit weak, make two or three appeals to him, and he’ll give it out. We wouldn’t even look to see if it was actually out or not and we would start celebrating. Moin Khan would tell me, ‘Mushtaq, well bowled, excellent bowling,’ and if DRS and [the] third umpire existed at that time, both Moin Khan and I would have been in jail,” Mushtaq was quoted as saying by PakPassion.
Meanwhile, the Pakistan team are currently taking on Bangladesh in a two-match Test series and trail 1-0 after losing the first Test by 10 wickets.
