Legendary Pakistan six-hitter Shahid Afridi has hinted that Babar Azam should be dismissed as limited overs skipper as “no captain has ever had such a clear opportunity”.

Azam stepped down from the leadership role in all three formats in November 2023, only to be brought back as limited overs captain in March 2024.

In his second stint as skipper, the 29-year-old has failed to get the results expected and it has once again led to calls for him to be stripped of the captaincy and play solely as a specialist batsman.

Most recently, Azam led the men in green in the 2024 T20 World Cup, where they were eliminated in the group stage.

“No captain has ever had such a clear opportunity. Usually, the captain is the first to be dismissed right after the World Cup ends,” Afridi was quoted as saying by Cricket Pakistan.

It should be noted that Azam was Pakistan’s highest run-scorer in the T20 World Cup with 122 runs in four matches at an average of 40.66 and a strike-rate of 101.66.
