Former Pakistan team director Mohammad Hafeez believes white-ball captain Babar Azam must bat at number three since the team “has a weak middle order”.

Calling the 29-year-old “[the] number one batter”, Hafeez praised him for his ability to adapt and handle whatever situation the men in green may find themselves in.

Azam has been Pakistan’s most consistent run-scorer for the past few years and due to the stability he brings, Hafeez reiterated that he has to come in at one down in case the team gets off to a bad start.

“Babar Azam is [the] number one batter. He handles every situation superbly. Pakistan has a weak middle order hence Babar batting at number three is the solution for Pakistan,” he was quoted as saying by journalist Arfa Feroz Zake on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Azam recently led Pakistan in the 2024 T20 World Cup and accumulated 122 runs in four matches at an average of 40.66 and a strike-rate of 101.66.

The men in green lost to the United States of America and India before fighting back to take down Canada and Ireland.

Despite claiming back-to-back wins, it was not enough to get them through to the Super Eights.
