Former Pakistan wicketkeeper-batsman Kamran Akmal said the men in green are heavily dependent on limited overs captain Babar Azam.
Since the 29-year-old is the team’s most consistent run-scorer, Akmal admitted that he has to keep stepping up and performing well.
He added that Azam is the only player in the Pakistan side who can “take the game [deep] by securing one end and forming a partnership”.
“The Pakistan team will be dependent on Babar [Azam] heavily and he should step up too because in Pakistan’s team, there is only one player who can take the game [deep] by securing one end and forming a partnership,” he said on his YouTube channel as quoted by Cricket Pakistan.
In the 2024 T20 World Cup, Azam amassed 122 runs in four matches at an average of 40.66 and a strike-rate of 101.66.
Pakistan lost their first two games against the United States of America and India before fighting back to beat Canada and Ireland.
Even though they were victorious in their last two group stage matches, the men in green failed to advance to the Super Eights.
