Former Pakistan team director and interim head coach Mohammad Hafeez said recently removed T20I captain Shaheen Shah Afridi’s “death bowling is becoming a big concern now” as he is conceding too many runs.
Hafeez’s comments come after Afridi led the Lahore Qalandars in the 2024 Pakistan Super League (PSL).
In the nine matches he played, the 23-year-old took 14 wickets at an average of 22.14 and an economy rate of 8.61.
Having seen the large amount of runs Afridi leaked throughout the tournament, Hafeez urged him to rectify the issue as he doesn’t want it turning into an issue for the Pakistan team.
“Shaheen Afridi’s death bowling is becoming a big concern now. He leaks too many runs and puts his team under pressure. I hope this does not become an issue for Pakistan cricket,” he was quoted as saying by journalist Farid Khan on X, formerly known as Twitter.
The Qalandars were the defending champions coming into PSL 9, but they completely flopped as they only managed to win one out of the 10 games they played.
Pakistan’s next assignment will be a five-match T20I series against New Zealand, which will be held in Rawalpindi and Lahore from April 18 to 27.
