Former England captain Nasser Hussain said the “biggest thing” Babar Azam can do for Pakistan is score “shed loads of runs.”

Pakistan have not been living up to expectations as of late, while Azam himself isn’t in the best of form.

During the recent three-match Test series against Australia, which Pakistan lost 3-0, he scored 126 runs at an average of 21.

He showed some signs of rediscovering his form in the five-match T20I series against New Zealand as he made 213 runs, which included three fifties, at an average of 42.60 and a strike-rate of 142.

Despite this, the men in green were still beaten 4-1.

Hussain noted that if Pakistan are to turn their fortunes around, they will need Azam firing on all cylinders.

“The biggest thing he can do for Pakistan cricket is get shed loads of runs,” he said in a video released by the International Cricket Council (ICC) as quoted by Cricket Pakistan.

Azam is now captaining the Peshawar Zalmi in the 2024 Pakistan Super League (PSL) and has scored 330 runs in five matches, which includes a century and two fifties, at an average of 82.50 and a strike-rate of 151.37.

Peshawar Zalmi Squad for PSL 9: Babar Azam (captain), Rovman Powell, Saim Ayub, Tom Kohler-Cadmore, Asif Ali, Mohammad Haris, Aamer Jamal, Naveen-ul-Haq, Khurram Shahzad, Salman Irshad, Arif Yaqoob, Umair Afridi, Dan Mousley, Haseebullah Khan, Mohammad Zeeshan, Mehran Mumtaz, Luke Wood, Sufiyan Muqeem, Waqar Salamkheil, Arshad Iqbal, Gus Atkinson, Shamar Joseph
