Pakistan wicketkeeper-batsman Mohammad Rizwan wants new opening batsman Saim Ayub to be given enough time to prove himself at the international level.
Ayub is one of the hottest batting prospects in the country and earned his call-up to the national team through a string of outstanding performances in domestic cricket.
The 21-year-old recently made his Test debut in the three-match series against Australia and scored 0 and 33 in the third Test in Sydney.
He followed that up with 39 runs in four T20Is against New Zealand at an average of 9.75 and a strike-rate of 130.
Even though his statistics haven’t been anywhere good enough, Rizwan insisted that young players like Ayub shouldn’t be dropped so soon as it will adversely affect his confidence.
“I think at the international level, players need some time,” he was quoted as saying by Geo Super.
Ayub is now playing for the Peshawar Zalmi in the 2024 Pakistan Super League (PSL), while Rizwan is captaining the Multan Sultans.
