Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan praised the national team for “keeping their nerve under pressure” to defeat Afghanistan by three wickets in their World Cup clash at Headingley on Saturday.

Pakistan, at one point, were heading towards a massive defeat, but all-rounder Imad Wasim saved them with an unbeaten 49, which came off 54 balls and included five boundaries.

Thanks to Imad, who was named Man of the Match, Pakistan triumphed with two balls to spare and kept their hopes of qualifying for the World Cup semi-finals alive.

“Congratulations to the Pakistan team for keeping their nerve under pressure and in the end winning against Afghanistan. I also especially want to congratulate Afghanistan for the grit and determination with which they played against Pakistan today and against India earlier,” Imran, who captained Pakistan to World Cup glory in 1992, said on Twitter.

With Pakistan having defeated Afghanistan, they will now have to beat Bangladesh at Lord’s on Friday to have any chance of reaching the last four.
