Ex-Pakistan captain Moin Khan believes that opener Abid Ali could be axed from the World Cup squad since the regular opening duo of Imam-ul-Haq and Fakhar Zaman have been in excellent form.

In the recently concluded five-match ODI series against England, Imam accumulated 234 runs in four games, which included a career-best knock of 151, at an average of 117.

As for Zaman, he amassed 200 runs in five matches, which included a hundred and a half-century, at an average of 40.

Abid only played the fifth ODI and scored five runs before being trapped lbw off the bowling of Chris Woakes.

“Sometimes you have to make infamous decisions for the benefit of the team,” Moin told Geo.tv. “No player is neglected intentionally. Abid has a bright career ahead and if he’s axed from squad, then he’ll surely get his due share in future events.”

Pakistan will now play two World Cup warm-up games against Afghanistan and Bangladesh in Bristol and Cardiff on May 24 and 26 respectively.

They will then begin their World Cup campaign against the West Indies in Nottingham on May 31.
