“Police stopped me and used foul language”

Pakistan batsman Umar Akmal has found himself in hot water once again after he became embroiled in a heated dispute with police in Lahore.

Akmal, who had recently returned home from playing in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) in the United Arab Emirates, was pulled over in his hometown for having a personalised number plate on his car, which has been deemed illegal by customs and excise officials.

The 26-year-old claims that upon being stopped, he was subject to verbal abuse from the police officers, which led to the two parties getting into an argument.

“Police stopped me and used foul language and they told me I would have to remove the number plate myself,” he said.

Akmal has been in and out of the Pakistan team as of late and while he has stolen the spotlight on the cricket pitch at times, the same can be said about his disciplinary issues off the field.

This isn’t the first time Akmal has been the subject of a traffic violation as in 2014, he spent a day in prison after getting into a brawl with a traffic warden who stopped him for breaking a traffic signal.

In the same year, he also allegedly got into a fight with a gate keeper at Gaddafi stadium in Lahore after he was not allowed to drive his car inside.

Akmal, who represented Pakistan in the ODI series against Australia in January, was also severely criticised by former head coach Waqar Younis, who branded him as selfish and undisciplined.
