New Zealand looked to be cruising for most of the second day in Christchurch, but Bangladesh clawed their way back into contention with a few quick wickets before rain halted their charge.

Having bowled out Bangladesh for 289 at the end of the first day, New Zealand made a solid start to their innings before opener Jeet Raval was clean bowled by Kamrul Islam Rabbi for 16.

Rabbi struck again two balls later as he removed captain Kane Williamson for only two runs.

Having lost two wickets within the space of three balls, the Black Caps were in need of a big partnership, and that was exactly what Tom Latham and Ross Taylor delivered as the pair put together a 106-run stand, during which both of them brought up their half-centuries.

Taskin Ahmed brought the partnership to an end when he had Latham caught behind for 68, which came off 111 balls and included 11 boundaries.

Taylor ended up making 77 off 103 deliveries, which included seven boundaries and two sixes, before he was sent packing by Mehedi Hasan Miraz.

Henry Nicholls and Mitchell Santner kept Bangladesh at bay for a while with a 75-run partnership, during which Nicholls surpassed his fifty, before Santner was given out lbw off the bowling of Shakib Al Hasan for 29.

Al Hasan struck twice in his next over as he cleaned up wicketkeeper BJ Watling and Colin de Grandhomme.

With Al Hasan’s three wickets having dented New Zealand’s innings, Nicholls and Tim Southee amassed a four-run stand before the rain came, which led to stumps being called soon after.

Nicholls finished on 56 off 93 balls, which included six boundaries, while Southee remained undefeated on four off six deliveries, which included one boundary.
