Brisbane Heat captain Chris Lynn led by example as he smashed a magnificent 75 to lead his side to a six-wicket win over the Sydney Thunder, which marked the Heat’s first win of their Big Bash League (BBL) campaign.

After being put in to bat by Lynn, the Thunder did not get off to the best of starts as they lost Jacques Kallis and Aiden Blizzard early on.

However, skipper Michael Hussey and Shane Watson steered the innings back on the right direction with a 97-run partnership before Watson was dismissed by James Hopes for 46.

Hussey went on to score 56 off 43 balls, which included two boundaries and two sixes, before he was caught behind off the bowling of Mark Steketee.

Thanks to Hussey and Watson, and some late help by Andre Russell and Ben Rohrer, the Thunder finished on 186/5 off their 20 overs.

Hopes, Steketee, Josh Lalor and Samuel Badree picked up one wicket apiece.

Chasing 187 to win, the Heat got off to a great start as wicketkeeper Jimmy Peirson and Lendl Simmons amassed a 72-run stand before Simmons was caught by Clint McKay off the bowling of Watson for 34.

Peirson ended up being removed for 40, while Nathan Reardon followed shortly after for just eight.

Lynn and Ben Cutting put the Heat within touching distance of the finish line with their 62-run partnership, during which Lynn surpassed his half-century.

However, once Lynn departed for 75 off 32 deliveries, which included six boundaries and six sixes, Cutting and Sam Heazlett finished things off with three balls to spare.

Russell was the most successful bowler with two wickets, while Watson and Chris Green claimed one wicket each.

Lynn was named Man of the Match.
