Sri Lanka’s deputy speaker of parliament Thilanga Sumathipala has become Sri Lanka Cricket’s (SLC) new president after beating Nishantha Ranatunga, the brother of former Sri Lanka captain Arjuna Ranatunga.

Sumathipala, who has served as SLC president in the past, received 88 votes on Sunday, while Nishantha only gained 56.

Arjuna meanwhile tried to fill one of the two vice-president posts, but the 80 votes he got was not enough as Jayantha Dharmadasa, who garnered 102 votes, and K Mathivanan, who received 90 votes, were elected to the posts.

Mohan de Silva, a former SLC president, was named the new secretary after his rival Hirantha Perera withdrew. Former Panadura Sports Club pace bowler Ravin Wickremaratne was elected assistant secretary.

Meanwhile, Colombo Cricket Club president Shammi Silva was appointed treasurer and Lalith Rambukwella secured the post of assistant treasurer.
