Usman Khawaja smashed a sparkling century as the Sydney Thunder beat the Melbourne Stars by one run in a thrilling showdown at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Stars captain David Hussey would have been pleased with his decision to bowl first early on as Jacques Kallis, Aiden Blizzard and Shane Watson were dismissed in quick succession.

However, despite removing batsman after batsman, Khawaja continued to take the attack to the Stars and went on to score an unbeaten 109 off 70 balls, which included 12 boundaries and three sixes, as the Thunder finished on 178/6 off their 20 overs.

John Hastings and Glenn Maxwell picked up two wickets apiece, while Scott Boland and Adam Zampa chipped in with one wicket each.

Chasing 179 to win, the Stars got off to a solid start before they began to lose wickets in a hurry. With the Stars struggling on 80/4 in the 11th over, former England batsman Kevin Pietersen launched a superb counter-attack and ended up making 76 off 42 deliveries, which included five boundaries and two sixes.

Pietersen’s dismissal in the penultimate over proved crucial for the Thunder as the Stars were unable to get the job done despite James Faulkner’s unbeaten 45 and the team needing three runs off the final ball, from which they scored two.

Andre Russell was the most successful bowler with two wickets, while Watson, Kallis and Clint McKay claimed one wicket each.

Khawaja was named Man of the Match.
