England all-rounder Moeen Ali scored 77 and took two key wickets to leave Australia in trouble on the second day of the first Ashes Test in Cardiff.

However, Australia opener Chris Rogers deserves a lot of credit for his spectacular knock of 95.

Starting out the day on 343/7, Ali and Stuart Broad amassed a 52-run partnership, during which Ali brought up his half-century, before Broad was caught behind off the bowling of Nathan Lyon for 18.

Ali ended up making 77 off 88 balls, which included 11 boundaries and a six, before he was caught by Shane Watson at slip off the bowling of Mitchell Starc.

England were bowled out for 430 when James Anderson was cleaned up by Starc for one run.

Starc was the pick of the bowlers with five wickets, while Josh Hazlewood snapped up three and Lyon chipped in with two.

Trailing by 430, Australia got off to an excellent start as Rogers and David Warner put together a 52-run stand before Warner was brilliantly caught by England skipper Alastair Cook at first slip off the bowling of Anderson for 17.

Once Warner had departed, all the other Australian batsmen, with the exception of Rogers, threw their wickets away after encouraging starts.

This was the case for Steve Smith, who made 33, captain Michael Clarke, who scored 38, and Adam Voges, who mustered 31.

Rogers meanwhile suffered a lapse of concentration while he was in the nineties and paid for it with his wicket as he was caught behind off the bowling of Mark Wood for 95, which came off 133 deliveries and included 11 boundaries and a six.

Watson and Lyon managed to accumulate an unbeaten six-run partnership before stumps was called.

Watson finished on 29 off 51 balls, which included six boundaries, while Lyon remained undefeated on six off 10 deliveries, which included one boundary.

Ali was the most successful bowler with two wickets, while Wood, Anderson and Ben Stokes claimed one wicket each.

Australia ended day two on 264/5 and will continue batting tomorrow at 11:00 local time or 10:00 GMT.
