Bangladesh pace bowler Rubel Hossain has been sent to jail by a Dhaka court over allegations that he raped a 19-year-old actress.

The actress, Naznin Akter Happy, also claimed that Hossain had lied about his intentions to marry her.

“The metropolitan magistrate court rejected his bail plea,” deputy commissioner of Dhaka police Anisur Rahman told AFP. “He was sent to prison pending the next hearing of the case.”

With Hossain’s future uncertain, there is a chance that his spot in Bangladesh’s World Cup squad will be filled by someone else.

“We are discussing the matter, so it is quite early to say what we are planning to do,” Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) CEO Nizamuddin Chowdhury said. “But he had been handling the matter personally so far. If he fails to join the squad in time, we have a contingency plan in place.”
