Australia left-arm pace bowler Mitchell Starc has been officially reprimanded for his “exaggerated celebration” when he dismissed India opener Murali Vijay on the second day of the fourth Test in Sydney.

Starc pleaded guilty to breaching Article 2.1.8 of the International Cricket Council (ICC) Code of Conduct, which relates to “conduct that either: (a) is contrary to the spirit of the game; or (b) brings the game into disrepute”.

Speaking about the incident, match referee Roshan Mahanama said: “The match officials felt that the player’s behaviour was not appropriate, and he was reminded of his responsibilities to extend respect to his opponent and to play within the spirit of the game at all times.”
