Legendary Australia captain Ricky Ponting believes that all-rounder Shane Watson should continue batting at number three despite his poor run of form with the bat.

Ponting’s comments come after rumours have surfaced that Joe Burns will make his debut during the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne and replace Watson at the number three spot. If this were to happen, it is likely that Watson will be demoted to number six on the batting line-up.

“He would be disappointed with his last few games around the results he has got but he is a class player and things are going to change,” Ponting was quoted as saying by the Herald Sun. “He is too good a player not to. It is the same old thing, until you have got someone better to put into any position in a side, you don’t change.
