The rural city of Wagga Wagga will host its maiden Sheffield Shield match after New South Wales announced that two of their games late in the season will be held outside Sydney.
Newcastle is the other Australian city to play host to New South Wales. They will do so in February when the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) is unavailable due to the World Cup.
Wagga Wagga’s Robertson Oval will host the match between New South Wales and Victoria from February 15 to 18.
Newcastle’s No.1 Sports Ground will be the place to be when New South Wales take on Western Australia from February 25 to 28.
“We are delighted to be able to take two Shield matches back to the bush,” Cricket New South Wales chief executive Andrew Jones said. “Country regions have been tremendous nurseries of cricketers for New South Wales and Australia, and it is great that cricket fans in Newcastle and Wagga Wagga will get a chance to see their heroes up close this summer.”
