“Given Shane’s workload in the past 12 months we consider it would be beneficial for him to have a longer break and continue his training program at home”

Australia all-rounder Shane Watson will miss the majority of the ongoing ODI series against England after he was granted a longer rest period by the national selectors.

Watson will now represent Australia during the final ODI in Adelaide on January 26.

In the meantime, Watson will be replaced by all-rounder Daniel Christian, who has been representing the Brisbane Heat in the ongoing Big Bash League (BBL).

Australia head coach Darren Lehmann noted that Watson needed all the rest he could get before the national team travel to South Africa next month.

“Given Shane’s workload in the past 12 months we consider it would be beneficial for him to have a longer break and continue his training program at home in Sydney ahead of the final ODI and the tour of South Africa,” Lehmann said. “Dan Christian, who has been in excellent form in recent weeks, has been added to the ODI Squad to provide an all-round option in Shane’s absence.”
