Steyn had been atop the rankings since July 2009
South Africa pace bowler Vernon Philander has dethroned his partner in crime, Dale Steyn, as the top ranked Test bowler on the International Cricket Council (ICC) rankings.
Philander replaced Steyn atop the rankings after taking seven wickets, which included his 100th Test wicket, during the first Test against India in Johannesburg.
Steyn, who had been atop the ICC Test Bowlers rankings since July 2009, only managed to take one wicket during the match.
Steyn is second on the all-time list of bowlers who have stayed atop the rankings for the longest period of time and only trails behind the legendary Muttiah Muralitharan.
“It has been a great couple of years for our squad,” Philander said. “What has been the most pleasing has been the all-round contribution from everyone in the squad, that has been the main reason for our success.
“Needless to say, it is always easier to be at the top of your game and successful when you are part of a winning team.”
