Lara is worried that Test cricket is starting to become a format of the past

Legendary West Indies batsman Brian Lara has called on the International Cricket Council (ICC) to remove the dull and boring future tours Test program and replace it with a Test championship in order to revive and add some flare to the purest format of the game.

The ICC have already agreed to the idea of a Test championship, but will not implement it until 2017 at the earliest, which Lara feels could be too late.

“It’s important that there is some league,” News.com.au quoted Lara, as saying. “That mundane exercise of Test series after Test series, I believe the time for that has gone.

“Obviously the Ashes is something of great importance, but I believe in a holistic look at Test cricket – if the ICC creates a league, the interest will come back. Some teams are playing more Test matches because of TV rights and money. Some teams don’t want to play other teams.”

Lara feels that it is time for the ICC to bring some “equality” back to the longer format, and added: “I believe there should be some equality in it, to bring some sanity to the game. It’s just meandering along, and that could be the big thing that could cause the game to lose its fans.”
