Sialkot head coach Mansoor Amjad is confident that opening batsman Azan Awais is “very close to playing for Pakistan”.
The 21-year-old has been in outstanding form on the domestic circuit, piling up centuries in first-class cricket.
During the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy (QeA Trophy), Awais stood out as one of the top performers, finishing as the fifth-highest run-scorer with 803 runs in 10 matches for Sialkot Region, which included three centuries and three fifties, at an impressive average of 50.18.
He then played for Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited in the President’s Cup Grade-I (1-Day) tournament and amassed 145 runs in six games, which included two half-centuries, at an average of 24.16.
Awais is currently involved in the President’s Trophy Grade-I competition and has accumulated 249 runs in four matches for Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited, which includes a hundred and a half-century, at an average of 35.57.
Given his consistent performances and growing maturity, Amjad believes the Sialkot-born batter is on the verge of earning a call-up to the Pakistan team.
“Azan Awais is very close to playing for Pakistan,” he told PakPassion.
The Pakistan team recently toured Sri Lanka for a three-match T20I series in Dambulla, which ended as a 1-1 draw after one game was washed out.
Their next assignment will be a three-match T20I series against Australia, which will be held in Lahore from January 29 to February 1.
