Former Pakistan captain Aamer Sohail believes batsman Babar Azam is “trying to score runs too quickly”, which is resulting in him getting out early.

Aamer noted that the 31-year-old is eager to “get to 50 in no time,” but feels it is the wrong approach as Azam needs to occupy the crease and build his innings.

Many would attribute this either to the constant criticism of Azam’s strike-rate or to the pressure he feels to deliver big scores after an extended slump in form.

“Babar Azam is trying to score runs too quickly. He wants to get to 50 in no time,” Aamer was quoted as saying by journalist Farid Khan on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Azam was recently in action in Pakistan’s home series against South Africa, and started off with 131 runs in two Tests, which included a top score of 50, at an average of 32.75.

Next up was the three-match T20I series, where he made 79 runs, which included a top score of 68, at an average of 39.50 and a strike-rate of 117.91.

After that came three ODIs, but Azam failed to have much of an impact as he was limited to 45 runs at an average of 15.

However, he turned things around in the three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka, scoring 165 runs, which included his first international hundred in over two years, at an average of 82.50.

Azam’s most recent assignment was a T20I tri-series against Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe, where he amassed 127 runs in five matches, which included a top score of 74, at an average of 31.75 and a strike-rate of 112.38.
