Pakistan left-arm seamer Mohammad Amir believes it would be “a very good decision” to appoint Shaheen Shah Afridi as T20I captain.
Afridi was recently named ODI skipper, but Amir thinks the 25-year-old should also take charge of the T20I side, which is currently led by middle order batsman Salman Ali Agha.
Amir feels with Afridi at the helm, the men in green will be a force to be reckoned with at the 2026 T20 World Cup, which is scheduled to be held from February to March in India and Sri Lanka.
It should be noted that Afridi was named Pakistan’s T20I captain in November 2023, but only led the national team in one series against New Zealand before being removed from the role.
“I believe that appointing Shaheen Shah as the T20 team captain would be a very good decision. Shaheen possesses all the qualities of a great leader. If there’s one outstanding T20 player in the current team, it’s definitely Shaheen. If the PCB appoints Shaheen Afridi as captain for the T20 World Cup, the outcome will be different,” he was quoted as saying on Facebook.
Afridi was recently in action in Pakistan’s home series against South Africa and began with five wickets in two Tests at an average of 28.60.
He followed that up with four wickets in two T20Is at an average of 17.75 and an economy rate of 8.87.
As for his debut series as ODI captain, he picked up three wickets in three matches at an average of 38.
After Pakistan finished playing South Africa, they faced Sri Lanka in a three-match ODI series and Afridi ended up claiming one wicket in two games at an average of 86.
He then featured in a T20I tri-series against Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe, and took four wickets in two matches at an average of 13 and an economy rate of 7.42.
