Veteran Pakistan cricketer Fawad Alam doesn’t want anyone criticising batsman Babar Azam as “he has consistently delivered outstanding performances”.
Fawad has no doubts about Azam’s batting skills and believes he has been unfortunate in T20Is over the past two to three years, especially since the men in green lacked finishers like Shahid Afridi or Abdul Razzaq.
The 30-year-old has not been part of the T20I team for quite some time as he was left out for Pakistan’s three-match series against Bangladesh in Lahore, the tour of Bangladesh, the three-match series against the West Indies, and the tri-series against the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Afghanistan.
Azam’s only appearance for Pakistan as of late came in their three-match ODI series against the West Indies, where he scored 56 runs at an average of 18.66.
“There is no question mark over Babar Azam’s skill. No one can point a finger at him – he has consistently delivered outstanding performances. His only bad luck, especially in the last two to three years in T20s, is that he didn’t have players like Shahid Afridi or Abdul Razzaq to finish games. All of our legendary players succeeded because they had match-winners lower down the order,” Fawad was quoted as saying by ARY News.
Pakistan recently played in the 2025 Asia Cup, where they beat Oman and the UAE in the group stage, but also lost to India.
They were defeated by India again in the Super Four, but booked their spot in the final after triumphing over Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.
Pakistan faced India in the Asia Cup final and lost by five wickets.
Next up for Pakistan will be a home series against South Africa comprising two Tests, three T20Is, and three ODIs.
The series will be held from October 12 to November 8.
