Former Australia opener Aaron Finch believes Pakistan batsman Babar Azam is “currently the best player in world cricket and arguably the greatest of this decade”.

Azam has been Pakistan’s most consistent run-scorer across all three formats for the last few years.

Finch’s praise for the 30-year-old comes after he was signed by the Sydney Sixers for the upcoming edition of the Big Bash League (BBL).

“He is currently the best player in world cricket and arguably the greatest of this decade,” Finch was quoted as saying by Cricket Pakistan.

Azam recently captained the Peshawar Zalmi in the 2025 Pakistan Super League (PSL) and scored 288 runs in 10 games, which included three fifties, at an average of 36 and a strike-rate of 128.57.

Despite having a solid campaign with the bat in PSL 10, he wasn’t selected for Pakistan’s three-match T20I series against Bangladesh in Lahore.

He continued to be ignored for the tour of Bangladesh, where Pakistan lost the T20I series 2-1.

Pakistan then toured the West Indies, but Azam was absent from the T20I team once again as the men in green won the series 2-1.

However, the Lahore-born batsman was involved in the three-match ODI series, which the West Indies won 2-1, and made 56 runs at an average of 18.66.

Pakistan are now taking on the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Afghanistan in a T20I tri-series in Sharjah, which will finish on September 7.

After that, the men in green will be involved in the 2025 Asia Cup, which will take place in the UAE from September 9 to 28.

Azam did not make the cut when Pakistan announced their squad for the T20I tri-series and Asia Cup.
