Former Pakistan batsman Basit Ali believes spin-bowling all-rounder Shadab Khan will replace Salman Ali Agha as T20I captain.

Shadab was recently appointed as Pakistan’s vice-captain in the shortest format, while Salman was put in charge of the team for the five-match T20I series against New Zealand.

However, Basit feels all this has been planned with the aim to ultimately have Shadab take over as captain.

“The selectors appointed Salman Ali Agha because they are looking to install Shadab Khan as captain,” he was quoted as saying by A Sports.

During the 2025 Pakistan Super League (PSL), Shadab captained Islamabad United and took 14 wickets in 10 matches at an average of 16.57 and an economy rate of 7.90.

He also scored 173 runs at an average of 24.71 and a strike-rate of 155.85.

After PSL 10 ended, the 26-year-old from Mianwali was involved in Pakistan’s three-match T20I series against Bangladesh and finished with four wickets at an average of 16.25 and an economy rate of 7.22.

Batting-wise, he ended up making 55 runs at an average of 27.50 and a strike-rate of 157.14.

Pakistan then toured Bangladesh for another three-match T20I series, but Shadab missed it after undergoing surgery on his right shoulder.

Pakistan are now touring the West Indies for three T20Is and three ODIs.

They are 1-0 up in the T20I series after winning the first match by 14 runs.

The 2nd T20I will be played on August 3 in Lauderhill.
