Pakistan opening batsman Saim Ayub believes wicketkeeper-batsman Azam Khan is capable of becoming captain in the future as he has “a very intelligent cricketing brain”.
Azam is the son of Moin Khan, who, in addition to being a wicketkeeper-batsman, captained the Pakistan team as well.
Even though the 26-year-old is a dangerous power-hitter, he has been criticised for being overweight and his inconsistent performances.
However, Ayub came to his defence, insisting that Azam “knows how to use his mind on the field”.
“Azam Khan has a very intelligent cricketing brain. He has the potential to become a captain and knows how to use his mind on the field,” he was quoted as saying by PakPassion on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Azam recently played for Islamabad United in the 2025 Pakistan Super League (PSL), but failed to have much of an impact as he was restricted to 66 runs in seven matches at an average of 11 and a strike-rate of 101.53.
After PSL 10, Pakistan faced Bangladesh in a three-match T20I series, which they won 3-0.
They then toured Bangladesh for another three-match T20I series, but lost 2-1.
Next up for Pakistan will be a limited overs tour of the West Indies, where they will play three T20Is and three ODIs from August 1 to 12.
