Former Pakistan captain Sarfaraz Ahmed believes it is unfair for people to only criticise Babar Azam as he has “delivered so many performances over the past 3-4 years”.

Sarfaraz acknowledged that Azam is going through a rough patch in scoring right now, but pointed out that other players in the national team are not pulling their weight as well.

In fact, he even went as far as saying that some of the other cricketers “are hiding behind Babar”.

“Babar Azam has delivered so many performances over the past 3-4 years. When you play so much cricket, a bad patch is bound to come at some point. Those who criticise him are only focusing on Babar Azam, but I believe they should look at other players as well. Many players are hiding behind Babar. Every player goes through a rough phase, and Babar is
facing his low period right now. I hope he comes out of it soon,” Sarfaraz was quoted as saying by TOK Sports on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Azam recently featured in Pakistan’s three-match ODI series against New Zealand and scored 129 runs, which included two fifties, at an average of 43.

Following this, he captained the Peshawar Zalmi in the 2025 Pakistan Super League (PSL) and accumulated 288 runs in 10 matches, which included three fifties, at an average of 36 and a strike-rate of 128.57.

Pakistan are now facing Bangladesh in a three-match T20I series, but Azam was left out of the squad.

The men in green hold a 2-0 lead going into the 3rd T20I on June 1 in Lahore.
