Pakistan left-arm seamer Mohammad Amir has recalled how legendary batsman Younis Khan protected him and advised him not to get involved in team politics.

The 32-year-old remembered that after Pakistan lost an ODI series to New Zealand in 2009, Younis had a private chat with him and two young players in the squad.

It was at this moment that Younis made it clear to Amir that he was responsible for everything since he was in charge of the national team.

“He said ‘I know everything that has been happening with the team. I don’t need to tell you that but you are kids and you have to serve Pakistan cricket and stay away from these things,'” Amir was quoted as saying by Cricket Pakistan.

“He went, ‘Whatever is going on, I will handle it. I am the leader and I will manage this.’ This is the role of a leader.”

The Pakistan team recently featured in the 2025 Champions Trophy and were dumped out in the group stage after going winless.

They are now touring New Zealand and kicked off their campaign on a low as they were thrashed 4-1 in the T20Is.

Pakistan and New Zealand are now playing a three-match ODI series, which the Black Caps lead 2-0.

The 3rd ODI will be held on April 5 in Mount Maunganui.
