Pakistan head coach Aaqib Javed has backed Babar Azam as an opening batsman and wants him to “play a big innings in [an] important match”.
The men in green have a crucial Champions Trophy match coming up as they will take on India on February 23 in Dubai.
Azam did well in the opening game of the tournament against New Zealand as he scored 64 runs off 90 balls, which included six boundaries and a six.
However, since Pakistan lost to the Black Caps by 60 runs, they cannot afford another loss when they go up against India.
Due to the situation they find themselves in, Aaqib is hoping that Azam steps up and delivers a match-winning performance.
“I believe Babar Azam should open in these conditions. I am hopeful that he will play a big innings in [an] important match,” he was quoted as saying by Cricket Pakistan.
