Former Pakistan all-rounder Mohammad Hafeez has urged the selectors to give Sufiyan Muqeem “a proper chance” as he is talented enough to “break records and become one of the best spinners in the world”.
Muqeem has seen more opportunities come his way as of late and has made the most of it.
During Pakistan’s tour of Australia, he took two wickets in two T20Is at an average of 15.
He had a much better showing in the three-match T20I series against Zimbabwe, claiming nine wickets, which included a five-wicket haul, at an unbelievable average of 4.66.
The 25-year-old followed it up with one wicket in one T20I against South Africa at an average of 53.
He then got the chance to make his ODI debut in the three-match series and didn’t disappoint as he finished with four wickets at an average of 13.
Having shown great potential, Hafeez wants Muqeem to keep playing regularly so that he can continue showcasing his talent.
“Sufiyan Muqeem is a very talented bowler. Pakistan should give him a proper chance in white-ball cricket, as he can break records and become one of the best spinners in the world,” he was quoted as saying on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Muqeem was not picked for Pakistan’s two-Test series against the West Indies in Multan, which concluded as a 1-1 draw.
He also failed to make the cut for the ODI tri-series against New Zealand and South Africa, and the 2025 Champions Trophy, which will be held from February 19 to March 9.
