Former cricketer Mudassar Nazar believes wicketkeeper-batsman Mohammad Rizwan should captain Pakistan in all three formats.

His comments come after Babar Azam stepped down as limited overs skipper at the beginning of October.

There have also been rumblings of Shan Masood possibly being removed as Test captain following a string of poor results.

Given the situation the men in green find themselves in, Mudassar admitted that the only person they haven’t tried as captain is Rizwan.

“Right now, they don’t have any choice left. They’ve tried everyone except Rizwan. They’ll have to make Rizwan the captain. I don’t think the inner circle and top management are very happy with Rizwan, but they’ll be forced to choose him. Otherwise, if they go for a younger player, it will turn into the same situation like with Babar Azam. It’s better to make a senior player the captain and then groom someone under him,” he told Cricket Pakistan.

Rizwan recently played in Pakistan’s two-Test series against Bangladesh and amassed 294 runs, which included a career-best knock of 171 not out, at an average of 98.

He then captained the Markhors in the Champions One-Day Cup, which was a domestic 50-over competition that took place in Faisalabad.

In the five games he featured in, the 32-year-old from Peshawar made 149 runs, which included a top score of 51, at an average of 29.80.

Rizwan is now involved in Pakistan’s three-match Test series against England and has scored 74 runs in two games at an average of 18.50.

The third Test began on October 24 in Rawalpindi.
