Legendary Pakistan left-arm seamer Wasim Akram recalled telling Babar Azam “not to become captain of any franchise in T20 leagues”.
Wasim noted that the 29-year-old, who most notably leads the Peshawar Zalmi in the Pakistan Super League (PSL), should play solely as a batsman and focus on what he does best – scoring plenty of runs.
His comments come at a time when Azam’s future as Pakistan’s limited overs captain remains up in the air, especially after the men in green were knocked out in the group stage of the 2024 T20 World Cup.
“I suggested Babar Azam [a] few years back not to become captain of any franchise in T20 leagues. He should bat and enjoy his cricket,” the Sultan of Swing was quoted as saying by journalist Arfa Feroz Zake on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Azam was recently in action for Pakistan in their two-match Test series against Bangladesh and accumulated 64 runs at an average of 16.
Pakistan failed to impress throughout the series and were subsequently whitewashed 2-0.
