Former Pakistan pace bowler Mohammad Asif believes Babar Azam “has so much more potential than just being a captain”.
The 29-year-old currently leads the men in green in limited overs cricket, but Asif feels it would be beneficial if he gave up the leadership role.
Azam’s future as captain remains shrouded in mystery, especially after Pakistan’s dismal performance in the 2024 T20 World Cup, where they were eliminated in the group stage.
Instead of focusing on retaining the captaincy, Asif wants Azam to reach his ultimate potential as a batsman and unleash it for the world to see.
“Babar Azam has so much more potential than just being a captain,” he was quoted as saying by Khel Shel on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Azam recently captained Pakistan in the 2024 T20 World Cup and was the team’s highest run-scorer with 122 runs in four matches at an average of 40.66 and a strike-rate of 101.66.
The men in green started off with losses to the United States of America and India before rebounding to defeat Canada and Ireland.
Despite winning their last two group stage games, Pakistan were unable to book their spot in the Super Eights.
