Legendary India opener Virender Sehwag believes if Babar Azam is removed as Pakistan’s limited overs captain, he “doesn’t deserve a place in the T20 team”.
Sehwag admitted that it “may sound harsh”, but pointed out that the 29-year-old’s performances do not meet the demands of the shortest format.
Sehwag’s comments will ruffle many feathers, especially considering Azam is the third-highest run-scorer in T20I history with 4,145 runs in 123 matches, which includes three centuries and 36 fifties, at an average of 41.03 and a strike-rate of 129.08.
“I may sound harsh, but if the captain changes, Babar doesn’t deserve a place in the T20 team. His performances are not as per the demands of today’s T20 cricket,” he was quoted as saying by A Sports.
Azam recently captained Pakistan in the 2024 T20 World Cup and was the team’s highest run-scorer with 122 runs in four matches at an average of 40.66 and a strike-rate of 101.66.
The men in green began with losses to the United States of America and India before rebounding to take down Canada and Ireland.
Even though they won their last two group stage games, they failed to progress to the Super Eights.
