Pakistan opener Imam-ul-Haq has fired back at batsman Ahmed Shehzad after the latter criticised limited overs captain Babar Azam for being a “fake king”.
Imam came to the defence of the 29-year-old, telling Shehzad that “it’s fine” if he doesn’t consider Azam to be his leader.
Azam has come under increasing pressure as of late, especially with Pakistan failing to impress in the 2024 T20 World Cup.
The men in green lost to the United States of America and India before triumphing over Canada and Ireland.
Despite this, it was not enough to earn them a spot in the Super Eights.
“He’s your captain, you don’t want to consider him as a captain, it’s fine,” Imam was quoted as saying by Cricket Pakistan.
It should be noted that Azam was Pakistan’s highest run-scorer in the T20 World Cup with 122 runs in four matches at an average of 40.66 and a strike-rate of 101.66.
