Former Pakistan team director and interim head coach Mohammad Hafeez said big-hitting opener Saim Ayub has “got good potential”, but still “needs to prove a lot of things.”

Ayub has started becoming a regular face in international cricket, but has yet to live up to expectations as he has amassed 219 runs in 17 T20Is at an average of 14.60 and a strike-rate of 125.86.

He also made his Test debut in the recent three-match series against Australia and scored 0 and 33 in the third Test in Sydney.

Considering he has yet to post a big score at the international level, Hafeez pointed out that the 21-year-old needs to keep working on improving his game.

“He’s got good potential, but he needs to prove a lot of things,” he was quoted as saying by Cricket Pakistan.

Ayub recently featured in Pakistan’s five-match T20I series against New Zealand and mustered 57 runs in five games at an average of 14.25 and a strike-rate of 129.54.

He is now involved in Pakistan’s three-match T20I series against Ireland and made 45 in the first game, which the men in green lost by five wickets.

After taking on Ireland, Pakistan will play four T20Is against England from May 22 to May 30.
