Former Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Asif believes it is unlikely the men in green will win the 2024 T20 World Cup and accused someone of “playing divide and rule.”
He noted that whoever this individual is, they “don’t want [the] players to stay united.”
Asif’s comments come after Shaheen Shah Afridi was removed as T20I skipper and Babar Azam returned as limited overs captain.
Afridi had only led the national team in one series, which consisted of five T20Is against New Zealand, before being stripped of the leadership role.
Asif acknowledged that all this drama will be damaging to the Pakistan team, but hopes they can put it in the past and shift their attention towards the T20 World Cup, which will be held in the West Indies and United States of America from June 1 to 29.
“I don’t know who but someone is playing divide and rule in [the] Pakistan cricket team. They don’t want [the] players to stay united. I want Pakistan to win [the] T20 World Cup 2024 but [it] doesn’t really look [likely] due to [the] drama going [on] in Pakistan cricket,” he was quoted as saying by journalist Arfa Feroz Zake on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Pakistan recently played a five-match T20I series against New Zealand, which ended as a 2-2 draw.
Next up for them will be a three-match T20I series against Ireland from May 10 to 14.
After that, the men in green will play four T20Is against England from May 22 to May 30.
