Former Pakistan head coach Misbah-ul-Haq has admitted that limited overs captain Babar Azam must improve tactically and avoid making the same mistakes of the past.

He noted the 29-year-old also has “room for improvement” and must continue developing his captaincy skills, especially since he will be scrutinised even more closely during his second tenure.

Azam returned as white-ball skipper after a decision was made to strip left-arm seamer Shaheen Shah Afridi of the T20I captaincy, even though he had only led the men in green in one series.

“Experience always enhances the captaincy, and there is always room for improvement. Babar needs to be stronger tactically. He needs to improve tactically on the mistakes we noticed in the past,” Misbah told Cricket Pakistan.

Azam recently led Pakistan in their five-match T20I series against New Zealand and scored 125 runs in five games, which included a top score of 69, at an average of 31.25 and a strike-rate of 138.88.

Pakistan’s next assignment will be a three-match T20I series against Ireland from May 10 to 14.

After that, they will play four T20Is against England from May 22 to May 30.
