Pakistan left-arm seamer Sohail Tanvir has lauded fellow fast bowler Mohammad Ali for his impact in the 2024 Pakistan Super League (PSL) as “nobody was expecting him to deliver like he did.”

Ali, who has played two Tests for Pakistan, played a pivotal role in the Multan Sultans’ run to the final as he was exceptional with the new ball and in the death overs.

Overall, he finished as the second-highest wicket-taker with 19 victims in 12 matches at an average of 18.63 and an economy rate of 8.23.

Tanvir admitted it was amazing to see a bowler more known for his red-ball bowling dominate in PSL 9 and added that Ali is one of the few seamers in Pakistan who are experts at bowling with the new ball.

“The most impressive. I mean, the guy from Multan who played for Pakistan in one or two odd Tests, I guess…Mohammad Ali. He was the one who was really known for his red-ball bowling, but the way he performed up till now, I think it’s quite amazing because nobody was expecting him to deliver like he did,” he told PakPassion.

“So, it’s a good sign for Pakistan cricket [and] especially someone like me because I really love guys bowling with the new ball and then come back in the latter part of the innings and bowl in the death overs as well.

“But, what I’ve seen in recent years, the problem with Pakistani bowlers, they are very good at the death but very few of them can bowl with a new ball.”

Pakistan’s next assignment will be a five-match T20I series against New Zealand, which will be played in Rawalpindi and Lahore from April 18 to 27.

Multan Sultans Squad for PSL 9: Mohammad Rizwan (captain), Iftikhar Ahmed, David Willey, Khushdil Shah, Usama Mir, Dawid Malan, Abbas Afridi, Reeza Hendricks, Tayyab Tahir, Shahnawaz Dahani, Usman Khan, Mohammad Ali, Faisal Akram, Yasir Khan, Chris Jordan, Aftab Ibrahim, Johnson Charles, Mohammad Shehzad
