Former Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Ramiz Raja said he was accused of backing Babar Azam during the latter’s time as captain, but insisted it was the right thing to do.
He noted that Azam is a key member of the national team and deserved to have support both on and off the field.
“The accusation made against me was that I backed Babar Azam. I support every captain because their role is to lead not just on the field during the game, but also extends to off the field as well,” Ramiz said on his YouTube channel as quoted by Cricket Pakistan.
Azam has been going through a rough patch for a few months and recently scored 126 runs in three Tests against Australia at an average of 21.
The 29-year-old performed a lot better in the five-match T20I series against New Zealand as he made 213 runs, which included three fifties, at an average of 42.60 and a strike-rate of 142.
Azam is now captaining the Peshawar Zalmi in the 2024 Pakistan Super League (PSL) and scored 68 and 72 in the first two matches against the Quetta Gladiators and Karachi Kings respectively.
