Former England captain Nasser Hussain said Babar Azam needs to be at his best during the 2024 T20 World Cup if Pakistan want to have a chance of being crowned champions.
Azam had a disappointing campaign in the 2022 T20 World Cup as he amassed 124 runs in seven matches, which included a top score of 53, at an average of 17.71 and a strike-rate of 93.23.
Even though Pakistan made it to the final before losing to England, Hussain noted that the 29-year-old will have to do a whole lot better this year.
“There will be a T20 World Cup in the Caribbean. They got to the finals last time. They will need their ex-skipper to put in a real performance,” he said in a video released by the International Cricket Council (ICC) as quoted by Cricket Pakistan.
Azam was recently involved in Pakistan’s three-match Test series against Australia and made 126 runs at an average of 21.
He followed that up with 213 runs, which included three fifties, at an average of 42.60 and a strike-rate of 142 in Pakistan’s five-match T20I series against New Zealand.
Azam will now captain the Peshawar Zalmi in the 2024 Pakistan Super League (PSL), which begins on February 17.
