Sunil Gavaskar, the legendary India batsman, has slammed the Pakistan team for their batting, questioning whether anyone other than captain Babar Azam can stand up and make their presence felt.
Azam himself hasn’t been in the best of form lately, but has slowly been getting back in the groove of things in the ongoing 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup.
In the five matches Pakistan have played, he has made 157 runs, which includes two half-centuries, at an average of 31.40.
A couple of other players have batted well aside from the 29-year-old, including wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan and opener Abdullah Shafique, who replaced the out of form Fakhar Zaman.
Rizwan has amassed 302 runs at an average of 75.50, while Shafique has scored 255 runs in four games at an average of 63.75.
However, looking forward, Gavaskar noted that Pakistan will need other batsmen other than Azam to score runs on a consistent basis.
“I mean how many players does Pakistan have? Particularly in the batting department. Apart from Babar who do they have?” he told India Today as quoted by Cricket Pakistan.
Pakistan started their World Cup campaign with back-to-back wins over the Netherlands and Sri Lanka before losing their next three matches against India, Australia and Afghanistan.
Their next match will be against South Africa on October 27 in Chennai.
